Chili Cookoff Competition
Everyone is invited to the Cape Fear Miata Clubs CHILI COOK-OFF competition on Friday, January 31, 2025. The competition will take place at noon at the Pine Valley branch of the New Hanover County Library, Osprey Room, 3802 College Road, Wilmington. We currently have 5 chefs planning to prepare their entry for the competition so we could use a few more chefs (even if you don’t have an old family favorite but you are willing to try a new recipe). We could use several more judges, and we need many more tasters/participants. Here is a recap of the rules:
- There is a $10 cash buy-in to participate as a chili chef. Upon completion of the competition, half of the entrance fee will be awarded to the first-place winner. The other half will be used by the activity organizers to offset the costs of the competition (plastic spoons, napkins, bowls, tablecloths, etc.). In addition, there will be an award for the first, second, and third place chili based on the votes of the judges.
- A $5 fee will be charged to each attendee to cover the chef’s expenses which entitles each attendee to a bowl of chili, corn bread and a drink.
- The chili must be prepared at home and brought to the competition in a crockpot.
- If you want to include ‘fixin’s’ with your entry like green onions, blue cheese, jalapenos, etc., you must bring those. Sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese will be provided by event organizers.
- Tables and electric power strips will be provided.
- No exotic meats (no alligator, muskrat, eel, etc.)
- If you are not participating as a chef, we welcome and encourage you to participate as a judge. Judging of the entries will be based on taste, consistency, texture, presentation, and aroma.
- Chefs will not be serving their own chili to keep the judging completely anonymous.
We will limit the number of chili entries to 10 – please let Judy Judson know by email jgamble56@yahoo.com by Monday, January 27th, if you wish to participate as a chef, judge, or an attendee (taster).
